Nobody asks me anymore –
Have you ever been in love?
They know the answer already.
A bitter, distant stare, a “no”
Spilling out before their tongue
Gets to the letter “e”.
That’s all that can be said
In one breath, not even anymore
Can I give an, “I wish” or a
“Someday” – those days I
Thought, would be now and
Those wishes have grown weary
On bursting stars, and furry
Dandelions and symmetrical
Clock numbers, burning red.
I can’t pretend and say
The future doesn’t look barren
When my garden hasn’t yet
Bloomed and when rain pours
With no pauses I sit watching,
Waiting for the sun to nudge through
And when it does, I can’t help but
Search for a budding seed,
Never knowing that if I looked, I
Could see my own petals growing.
